Mates Rates

mates rates is a family owned and operated business interested in helping you

What's in a name

Mates Rates is an old Australian expression for giving better prices to people you care about - your mates. Although our name is a little Aussie sounding, it sums up what we do perfectly. We are a mortgage broker business that is dedicated to looking after your interests as if you were our best mate.

We not only find you fantastic mortgage options, but we use our commissions to help you access interest savings that are simply unavailable from any lender, non-bank lender or mortgage broker.

We believe that mates look after each other, not just on price, but in service, consideration, respect and caring. Mates Rates Mortgages is completely unique in an industry riddled with catches and traps, hidden fees and clever marketing .

We are a close group of mortgage specialists that punches above our weight and we're on your side, because we all think it's the right thing to do.

Who we are and why we are different

Mates Rates is not a slick, high profit machine. We are a family owned, family oriented business. We believe in working smart and working hard to achieve outcomes for ourselves, our staff and our customers. We are not now, and will never be a franchise operation.

Mates Rates mortgage brokers are not paid on commission, but are salaried, educated professionals. Each broker undergoes ongoing training and is supported by other experienced mortgage professionals. From the beginning , we chose to be on your side. Unlike any lender, or mortgage broker:

  • There is no additional cost for our service.
  • Lenders pay Mates Rates commission over the life of the your loan and we use this commission to help you pay off your mortgage.
  • Our buying power ensures interest rates that Mates Rates obtains for you are the same or better than what the you will get from any of these lenders directly.

In the beginning

The Team at Mates Rates Mortgages started out as the bSmart project in February 2004. Although we had been around real estate and mortgages for decades, we were pretty new to the broking industry and had a lot to learn. However we did know that mortgage brokers had the potential to really help or really harm borrowers.

Our mission from the start was to make sure we helped and also to do what we can to help the rest of the industry to do the same. The bSmart project was developed around professionalising advice and by using lender paid commissions to help, rather than harm the borrower .bSmart featured on Today Tonight on 24th June 2004, bSmart brokered it's first mortgage soon after.

In the years that followed, bSmart became much simpler. The standard of help we were able to provide and the level of commission that we passed on borrowers both grew significantly. In late in 2005, bSmart moved out of 'project' mode and Mates Rates Mortgages was born.

We have been looking after people like you since the beginning and sharing our commission profits along the way because we think it's the right thing to do. The range of lenders we access is second to none. Most of our Team are full time employees, although we have some casual staff that help us when we get really busy. All are paid the same, no matter what loan or lender you choose .

We know the greatest challenge you face is sorting mortgage myths from the real information you need to make an informed decision. Whether you choose to use our service or not, if you are a borrower, we're on your side.
